New Zealand Launches Online Register of Doctors

  • 19 September 2002

The New Zealand Medical Council has launched an online register of doctors that enables members of the public to freely check the details of 10,000 doctors.

The register contains details of each doctor’s qualifications and any restrictions on their practice. The register also confirms whether a doctor holds a practising certificate, and the type and date of registration.

The Medical Council investigates complaints about physicians, performs formal reviews, and registers physicians trained overseas.

According to the New Zealand Herald Medical Council the new site is intended to improve the relationship between doctors and patients.

"This is part of the council’s work in setting standards and contributes to fulfilling the primary purpose of the Medical Council, which is to protect the health of the public of New Zealand," President Tony Baird told the New Zealand Herald.

The register of Doctors can be found on the Medical Council’s website. The Medical Council states that the list is provided for guidance only and is not the legal register.
