Welsh GP surgery offers video podcasts

A rural general practice in Wales has started offering video podcasts for its patients covering a variety of subjects, starting with inhaler technique.

Builth & Llanwrtyd Medical Practice in Powys, which stretches over two sites and covers 7,700 people, has uploaded its first video, instructing patients in effective use of an inhaler, onto its site in formats that can be viewed both on a PC and on a video iPod.

The two-minute video is presented by practice nurse Sister Pat Jones (above), who takes viewers through a step-by-step demonstration of loading and breathing from an inhaler.

While there is currently no podcast feed to subscribe to, the practice has promised future videos will be uploaded.

Dr Richard Walters, who helped to develop the podcast project, told BBC News Online: "Podcasts are a natural progression. We also aim to provide casts on the importance of cervical screening and flu jabs."

"We find that many people have difficulties using inhalers so the podcast shows a practice nurse demonstrating how to use one," he added.

The videos are part of a recent overhaul of the practice’s website that also includes online repeat prescriptions through a secure form. The new site was entirely built by the partners.

The Welsh assembly government is also offering £250 to practices towards redeveloping their websites.
