Conference to focus on patient-controlled records

  • 18 September 2007

Patient controlled records will be the focus of the British Computer Society’s Primary Health Care Specialist Group annual conference next week.

The PHCSG says the idea that a patient’s health record should be held by a trusted third party, chosen by the patient and then shared with those care providers with whom the patient chooses to engage, is one that is attracting much attention worldwide.

The model is seen as solving many of the issues associated with records bound within a particular care provider or single healthcare community and the conference plans to look at the technical, cultural and ethical issues that will need to be addressed to realise the vision.

Speakers include Marlene Winfield, Connecting for Health’s patient lead, Dr Amir Hannan, a Cheshire GP who has pioneered patient access to records and Thomas Beale from Ocean Informatics on standards for global health records.

The conference will also include an update from CfH on its primary care IT projects including GP Systems of Choice, GP2GP record transfer and the Electronic Prescription Service.

The conference will take place from 28 to 29 September at Eynsham Hall, Oxfordshire. The conference is open to all and a conference booking form and online registration details are available on the PHCSG’s website www.phcsg.org. For queries contact Jill Riley on 01905 727461, email jill@phcsg.org
