Newcastle goes live with EuroKing maternity system

Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has gone live with a EuroKing Miracle web-based maternity information system (MIS) in the first stage of a wider implementation.

The third generation E3 system has initially gone-live in the maternity unit of Royal Victoria Infirmary, and will be extended to other hospitals, community midwives and the neighboring Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust later this year.

The system will be used to create a single, consistent record for pregnant women across Newcastle and Northumbria. About 20% of the pregnant women in the area have shared care across the two trusts.

EuroKing’s managing director, Jonathan Raife, told E-Health Insider: “All data will now be captured electronically and immediately stored on the E3 mother and baby record.

“It was vital for both trusts to be able to access a single, consistent record for the women they care for. E3’s Connect2 capability gives them this functionality. Both trusts will have instant access, in real time, to mother and baby records from within hospital and remotely, in the community, via GPRS.”

The MIS has been implemented across Newcastle’s fetal ultrasound, EPAC, antenatal, delivery, postnatal and neonatal departments and integrated with the trust’s existing ViewPoint system.

Using the Connect2 architecture, it has also been integrated with EuroKing’s CGT monitoring software, Trium, which allows midwives to monitor up to 32 beds from one work station.

Raife added: “The E3 system we have put in integrates GE’s ViewPoint gynaecological and pre-natal diagnosis systems, which were supplied by EuroKing a while back. That allows staff to collect data directly from ultrasound equipment and update their patient database and existing CTG monitoring software.

“We are deploying this using a phased approach and initial feedback from the midwives at Newcastle has been very positive. In the near future, we will roll this out to community staff and align the system with Northumbria, as envisaged in the project tender.

“The system will also integrate with the trust’s new patient administration system being provided by University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre.”

To ensure a seamless transition, EuroKing archived all information stored on Newcastle’s existing McKesson Maternity System and migrated all open pregnancies. Users will be able to access previous records without having to log in from the new E3 system.

EuroKing says that the introduction of E3 means the trust will now be able to automatically run audits to assist with clinical negligence scheme for trusts maternity reporting and report on admissions for payment by results.
