Misys completes merger with Allscripts

  • 15 October 2008

British software firm Misys has completed its merger with US health software firm Allscripts to create Allscripts-Misys. The company will retain the Allscripts brand name.

The merger will create one of the largest Electronic Health Record and Practice Management firms in the US market, which counts nearly one in three US primary care physicians as customers.

AllscriptsMisys also provides information and connectivity solutions to more than 700 US hospitals and nearly 7,000 post-acute and homecare organizations. The company is particularly strong in the field of e-prescribing.

The new company has been formed following the merger of a subsidiary of Allscripts Healthcare Solutions and Misys Healthcare Systems. The complex deal has resulted in Misys becoming the “controlling shareholder” in the new merged company

Though a British company the healthcare division of Misys is principally active in the US healthcare market. Misys also operates in the banking and financial services sectors.

Mike Lawrie, executive chairman of AllscriptsMisys and CEO of Misys, said in a statement, "By merging two healthcare technology powerhouses, we’ve created a company capable of delivering the quality and cost improvements that healthcare providers and patients have long sought. Working together with our customers, AllscriptsMisys will deliver on the promise and potential of healthcare technology."

AllscriptsMisys, billed as new Allscripts, says it aims to be the clear leader in providing innovative software, connectivity and information solutions.

The company says that approximately 150,000 physicians across the US daily use one or more of the company’s portfolio of EHR, Practice Management, ePrescribing and other ambulatory solutions.

"AllscriptsMisys has the size and scope to bring real transformation to healthcare by using our software to connect physicians and other key healthcare stakeholders to the information they need to deliver higher quality outcomes," said Glen Tullman, CEO of AllscriptsMisys.

Tullman added: "This industry has been talking for years about the value of connecting the isolated silos of healthcare information, but with AllscriptsMisys, it’s no longer a vision — we’re doing it right now in hospitals and clinics across the nation."

One of the priorities of the new company will be to convince the 90,000 former Misys Practice Management clients who lack an EHR to adopt an Allscripts HER.
