Carestream Health has installed a PACS solution into three military hospitals in Austria.

The PACS solution consists of installations at Wien-Stammersdorf in Vienna, together with hospitals at Graz and Innsbruck, all of which are linked to a central PACS archive located in Vienna.

The tender process to replace the existing PACS systems in these hospitals was conducted by the National Defence Ministry for Armament and Procurement.

Dr P Rankl, senior consultant for the Radiology and Imaging Diagnostics Department at the military hospital in Wien-Stammersdorf, Austria’s largest military hospital, said: "We require a PACS System that can be customised to meet our needs as we provide specialist care, which only a small number of hospitals are able to provide."

The new PACS system enables real-time evaluations of sensitive and serious cases in Innsbruck and Graz via the data connection. "This leads to the desired results in diagnosis and treatment, which has only now become possible using PACS and system networking," said Dr Rankl.

He added that it is also planned to use the PACS system to aid remote diagnosis for soldiers who are deployed abroad.

The Wien-Stammersdorf in Vienna handles over 130,000 outpatients and around 6,000 in-patient treatments annually. The main focus is on army and disaster medical services, alongside standard medical care.
