Kainos eDischarge passes ITK tests

  • 29 September 2010

Kainos has announced that the electronic discharge summary solution that it has been developing with Ipswich Hospitals NHS Trust has passed NHS Connecting for Health’s Interoperability Toolkit proof of concept trials.

Kainos formed a consortium with Intersystems to take part in the PoC for electronic discharge summary solutions.

Although it was not mandatory for the companies involved in the trials to involve NHS customers, Kainos worked with clinicians at Ipswich on a system that is now being marketed to the NHS as Evolve eDischarge.

The implementation at Ipswich has enabled the hospital to deliver 90% of its discharge summaries to GPs within the national target of 24 hours. The summaries can be delivered using a variety of media, including NHS Mail and XML message direct to the GPs’ own systems.

The company says other benefits of the system include the electronic capture of key clinical information, improved coding, and smoother workflows within the hospital.

Kainos signed a £1m deal with Ipswich in November 2009 to convert its paper notes into electronic format, using the Evolve electronic document records management solution (EDRMS), which has since been adopted by West Suffolk and Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology NHS trusts.
