Carefx, a specialist in healthcare interoperability and portals, has been bought by US military communications and information technology specialist Harris Corp for £96m ($155m).

The company has enjoyed recent contract wins in the NHS, where it has formed partnerships with both CSC and IBM.

Carefx, which is based in Scottsdale, Arizona, provides products to manage and view patient information, including X-rays and electronic health records. Founded in 2002, the company has 250 employees.

"Carefx has been transforming the way hospitals and healthcare providers achieve interoperability between disparate systems," said Jim Traficant, vice president and general manager, Harris Healthcare Solutions.

"By giving clinicians the information they need – where and when they need it – the Fusionfx solution suite creates a seamless end-user experience."

The company’s software is used in more than 800 hospitals, healthcare systems and health information exchanges in North America, Europe and Asia.

Florida-based Harris, already provides health information exchange services to the US Defence and Veterans Affairs departments, will offer Carefx software to government customers, Traficant said.

In the UK, Carefx has won a series of contracts over the past year. Customers include Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust and Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

Harris is acquiring Carefx in an all-cash deal.
