Hospital EPRs: Manchester trusts decide
The Manchester Care Record creates shared care plans for "at risk" patients.

Two hospital trusts in the Manchester region will implement different electronic patient record systems.

University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust has decided to implement Allscripts Sunrise as its EPR, while Stockport NHS Foundation Trust has picked Intersystems’ TrakCare.

As reported by Digital Health News in May 2014, the two trusts were part of a joint procurement process for an EPR alongside East Cheshire NHS Trust. However, earlier this year the trusts agreed to procure separately.

University Hospital of South Manchester’s decision follows the implementation of Sunrise at nearby Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust in 2013.

South Manchester's chief executive Dr Attila Vegh said: "Purchasing and implementing an electronic patient record system is an important step towards becoming a top-10 NHS provider in the country.”

He added that Sunrise has a “strong track record” for delivering benefits in hospitals.

“The electronic patient record system will enable us to transform the way we work, and as a project will empower clinical staff to lead the new design of the system and service redesign across the whole pathway of care for patients."

Last summer Allscripts purchased UK-based Oasis Medical Solutions, adding a PAS to its suite of clincal products.

Stockport intends to start rolling out TrakCare as the acute system at its Stepping Hill Hospital from January 2016 and it is expected to be fully in place across the whole hospital by 2018.

It will replace the trust’s current patient administration system, CSC’s Clinicom.

Dr James Catania, medical director at Stockport, said: “This is a more efficient way of accessing records, with less room for error, and better sharing of data between staff to ensure the best possible joined-up care and treatment for our patients.”

Intersystems’ TrakCare has a strong foothold in Scotland, covering around 70% of the population, but has recently started to make a mark in the English market.

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust and Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust are also implementing the system.
