NHS Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group organises and monitors health services for around 300,000 patients, and is working with local GP surgeries to move services out of hospital and to find new ways to deliver them.
It has used skin treatment as one opportunity to try out a different approach, and has deployed 43 Huawei wi-fi devices running over the EE 4G network to practices to enable doctors and nurses to use smartphones to access TELEDerm; a skin cancer screening tool.
The devices enable the medical staff to capture a high-quality dermoscopic image that is sent, along with a pro-forma clinical history, to a skin specialist for diagnosis.
Reports are returned in PDF format by email, on average within two working days. Of the patients that have used the service, 74% have not needed further, secondary care treatment.
