POLL: Will NHSX improve digital transformation in the NHS?
- 21 February 2019
With the official announcement of NHSX, a new unit which will oversee digital transformation of the health and care system, Digital Health News is asking readers for their opinion on whether it will have an effect.
Confirmed by Digital Health News and then later announced by government, the organisation will bring together the Department of Health and Social Care, NHS England and NHS Improvement.
A new CEO is set to head up NHSX and will have to report to the secretary of state for health and social care, the chief executives of NHS England and NHS Improvement, as well as the permanent secretary of the Department of Health and Social Care.
The main responsibilities of the new unit include developing, agreeing and mandating clear standards for the use of technology in the NHS as well as setting national strategy and mandating cyber security standard.
Following the launch of NHSX, we are asking readers whether they think the brand new unit will help improve digital transformation or not.
You have until midday on 28 February to cast your vote and the results will be published shortly afterwards.

This is NPFiT/CFH all over again?
And what happened to that..
More new letter heads for the same people..
If this new body was created by industry experts from sectors who have experience solving the issues the NHS face then it might. However, my impression is it will be run by the usual suspects from legacy NHS positions and will hit the same issues.
Not in the slightest. The national ‘digital’ strategy is fundamentally flawed. Visionary possibly, but impractical, with existing issues that have plagued previous programmes either ignored or sidestepped in favour of technologies that are years away from giving the benefits talked about.
Have we not been here before?
New leadership and a new start. Multiple siloes and empires hasn’t helped. I’m going to get behind it. Hancock has shaken things up for the better in my opinion.
I agree. Hancock knows what he is doing, unlike his predecessors. Rally round him, and stop sneering.
They need domain experts to determine what the clinicians need in support of their healthcare work, and assist the software designers to produce something useful to the front line staff.
Without doubt the answer is NO.
Are these the same people under new name? Then the answer is ‘no’…
Totally agree. They have wasted billions until now. It is going to be just a rebranding exercise. Keeping non performers in cushy jobs. Get rid of no performers first. I’m always amazed that all these project managers have all these certifications but not adhering to the standards.
The name X is a bad idea. The NHS is based on openess and trust. NHSX implies secrecy and at this time of change we need to have open doors.
Andrew, that’s odd, where does it say these are project managers? Indeed, some decent project management is what NHS IT needs above many many things.
It’s time to stop the nonsense. Wards are closing and millions are being spent on iPods now Samsung phones. They don’t even work half the time. And trying to submit the observed is making extra work; this time could be spent on actual patient care!
Wrong question. What matters is whether NHSX will do anything for healthcare (as opposed to data harvesting and the digital technology industry). Answer: definitely not. NHSX will simply increase the prioritisation of data harvesting and digital technology over healthcare. The very the last thing we need is more digital tech people running the NHS, which has already been transformed into a data harvesting machine with no regard for human beings or their needs.
I don’t think it will. Too many cooks spoil the broth.
However if they actually get boots on the ground to localities rather than blindly following the new long term plan then it may just work.
I fear however that NHS X will do more harm than good, especially against the wider NHS difficulties that clearly need looking into but somehow funding has been found for this ‘new’ body.
