The latest Movers and Shakers roundup features the appointment of a new chief nursing officer for England and new chairs at Medway Foundation Trust and King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.


NHS England has announced that Duncan Burton has been appointed as chief nursing officer for England, with immediate effect.

A nurse of more than 25 years, Burton was most recently deputy chief nursing officer where he led national work on the maternity and neonatal programme, workforce policies and the children and young people’s transformation programme.


Adam Sharples, vice-chair at Barts Health NHS Trust, will take over as acting chair following Jacqui Smith’s resignation in July 2024.


Ann Marr OBE has announced that she is to step down from her role as chief executive at Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust after serving the NHS for almost 44 years. She will remain in post to enable recruitment to take place.


Carmen Howey joined Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust in July 2024 as group medical director.


Sir David Behan has been appointed as the new chair of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He is currently a non-executive director on NHS England’s board, where his term ends this summer.


Felicity Taylor-Drewe will take up the role of chief operating officer of Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in October 2024. She is currently chief operating officer at Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.


John Goulston will take over as chair of Medway Foundation Trust in the summer of 2024. He is already chair of Kent Community Healthcare Foundation Trust, where his term ends next year.


Professor Karen Dunderdale took over the running of United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust and Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust as group chief executive on 1 July 2024.


Lisa Glynn, who is currently director of clinical services at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, has become acting chief operating officer for the period between Sara Randall retiring from the trust and the NHS in July and Felicity Taylor-Drewe joining in October 2024.


Dr Manjeet Shehmar has been appointed as the new medical director at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. She is also currently chief medical officer at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust.


Philippa Slinger, former chief executive of Devon Integrated Care System, took over the chair’s role at University Hospitals Sussex Foundation Trust this summer.


Sue Whelan-Tracy, who has been a lay member of the NMC’s council since 2020, has been appointed by NHS England to replace Jagtar Singh as chair at Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership Trust, after 10 years in post from Sept 2024.
