  • Implementation of TrakCare-based system led to a 36% reduction in sepsis cases between 2019 and 2023
  • InterSystems EPR has also improved staff efficiency and patient care quality at the trust

North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust has received accolades from NHS England following the success of its electronic observations (eObs) and sepsis dashboard.

The trust received the NHS Blueprint of the Month award in July after its eObs platform led to a 36% reduction in sepsis cases across its inpatient wards between 2019 and 2023.

The eObs system and Early Warning Score (EWS) sepsis dashboard are powered by InterSystems‘ TrakCare electronic patient record (EPR), which has been in use at North Tees and Hartlepool since 2015.

“This was a great opportunity to celebrate and gain recognition for our trust’s digital transformation,” said Marie Collingwood-Graham, digital programme senior project manager at North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust.

“It’s a testament to all staff helping to develop and use our digital systems, and the support of InterSystems TrakCare, which has been instrumental in our success with the blueprint”.

North Tees recently added new functionality to its TrakCare EPR, including digital documentation for ward admissions and real-time access to patient records from any location throughout its hospitals.

The updates have helped reduce the time it takes staff to complete observations by automating data entry and providing immediate access to patient information, leading to faster response times and improved patient care.

Colin Henderson, country manager for InterSystems UK&I, said: “We are thrilled to see North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust recognised for their outstanding work.

“The success of their eObs and EWS Sepsis Dashboard highlights the impact that innovative technology and dedicated staff can have on patient care and operational efficiency”.

The NHS Blueprint of the Month award is part of the NHSE national blueprinting programme, a scheme designed to highlight and promote successful digital transformation initiatives within the NHS.

Established as part of the Global Digital Exemplar programme, the initiative aims to showcase best practices in digital transformation and provide guidelines that can be replicated by other NHS organisations.
