Movers and Shakers news roundup

Our latest Movers and Shakers roundup includes the appointments of a national chief clinical information officer (CCIO) and chief nursing information officer (CNIO) at NHS England.


Dr Alec Price-Forbes has been appointed as the national CCIO and Helen Balsdon as the national CNIO.

Dr Price-Forbes is a consultant rheumatologist and former CCIO for Coventry and Warwickshire’s sustainability and transformation partnership, Better Health, Better Care, Better Value. Balsdon has been in post as interim national CNIO since last year.


Beverley Bryant has been appointed chief digital information officer (CDIO) for University Hospitals Dorset to lead their digital strategy.  She joins from Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Trust and Kings College Hospitals NHS Trust where she was joint CDIO.

She will start in her new role on 28 October 2024. Before she joins, she is undertaking a rapid review of electronic patient record (EPR) plans at nine acute NHS trusts, commissioned by John Quinn, chief information officer at NHSE.


Anu Singh replaced Jonathan Fellows as chair of NHS Birmingham and Solihull Integrated Care Board from 1 September 2024.


Dan Moore is serving as acting chief executive of Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust during September and October 2024. Nikhil Khashu will join in autumn 2024 as chief executive from NHS England.


Current interim chief executive of Dudley Integrated Health and Care Trust and chief operating officer at Black Country Integrated Care Board, Matthew Hartland, is joining the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham from October 2024 as interim chief executive.


Peter Moore has been appointed as the new chief executive of NHS Borders. He took over the role in early September 2024 following the retirement of Ralph Roberts.


Sarah Brennan joined Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust as chief operating officer in September 2024, having previously held the same role at Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.


North Bristol NHS Trust and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust announced the appointment of two hospital managing directors.

Glyn Howells and Professor Stuart Walker have taken up the roles on an initial 12-month period and will be responsible for day-to-day leadership and running of the two organisations.


After an NHS career spanning 38 years, Kevin Jarrold is retiring from his role as the joint chief information officer (CIO) at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust on 30 September 2024.

Robbie Cline has been appointed as the joint CIO for the North West London Acute Provider Collaborative. He will take over on 1 October 2024, immediately following Jarrold’s retirement.


Lynne Carter became interim chief executive this month at Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.


Jim Austin joined Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Trust as interim chief executive this September and will remain in the role until April 2026.


Health Innovation West Midlands has made a number of new appointments to its management board.

These include Dr David Aldulaimi, clinical director at South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust, and Dr Paul Edmonson-Jones, chief medical officer at Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Integrated Care Board.
