  • The University Hospitals of Northamptonshire (UHN) Group has confirmed that a date for the go-live of System C’s BadgerNet maternity electronic patient record (EPR) has been set
  • The system will go live at Kettering General Hospital on 8 July 2025 and at Northampton General Hospital by the end of this year
  • Concerns were raised in August 2024 by UHN's Clinical Safety and Quality Committee that the lack of a go-live date poses "potential operational risks"

The University Hospitals of Northamptonshire (UHN) Group has confirmed a go-live date for its maternity electronic patient record (EPR) system.

Concerns were previously raised about the lack of an implementation date for the System C’s BadgerNet maternity EPR at the group, which brings together Northampton General Hospital and Kettering General Hospital.

In a UHN Group board paper, published on 2 August 2024, the Clinical Safety and Quality Committee said “there are potential operational risks” associated with the lack of a go-live date.

However a spokesperson for the group, told Digital Health News that an implementation date has now been confirmed.

“Our transition to BadgerNet is planned to go live at Kettering General Hospital in Summer 2025 and at Northampton General Hospital by the end of 2025.

“We do not anticipate any impact operationally on care arrangements during the transition.

“The new system will aim to ensure we are aligned with national maternity standards for patient care and staff experience,” the spokesperson said.

A board paper, published on 7 February 2025 said that the BadgerNet EPR will go live at Kettering General Hospital on 8 July 2025, adding that the group is waiting for System C to confirm the launch date for Northampton General Hospital.

The BadgerNet maternity system is a paperless early pregnancy, gynaecology and maternity system which enables a single pregnancy record to run across multiple sites.

Nick Wilson, chief executive of System C, told Digital Health News: “We have been working closely with the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire Group in the implementation of BadgerNet to enhance the delivery of its maternity services.

“Work is progressing well and training starts next week, with the system at Kettering General Hospital planned to go live in July, followed by Northampton General Hospital later in the year.
“We look forward to continuing to support the trusts throughout the implementation stage and beyond.”

The UHN group will follow other NHS organisations including University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust, which rolled out the BadgerNet maternity system and Badger Notes online portal and app in June 2024.

Three trusts in the south west of England which form the Bath and North East Somerset Swindon and Wiltshire Acute Hospital Alliance are also planning to go live with BadgerNet in 2025.

The Welsh government announced in January 2025 that BadgerNet is expected to be available across Wales by March 2026.

Meanwhile, Croydon Health Services NHS Trust published a tender notice on 5 February 2025 seeking re-implementation and support for the maternity element of its Cerner Millennium (Oracle Health) EPR.
