  • Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has signed a £53m, 10-year deal with Nervecentre for an EPR
  • The system aims to replace multiple legacy systems across three hospitals
  • The move supports a wider ambition for a shared EPR across Liverpool’s health organisations

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has appointed UK firm Nervecentre to supply its new electronic patient record (EPR) system.

The £53 million, 10-year agreement will deliver a single, integrated digital patient record across Aintree University Hospital, Broadgreen Hospital and Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

Liverpool University Hospitals was one of the last remaining acute trusts without an EPR under NHS England’s Frontline Digitisation programme, but had long been expected to announce Nervecentre as its preferred supplier.

James Sumner, group chief executive at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “This is a significant step forward in our digital journey. It’s a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform how we work and how we care for our patients.

“We look forward to working together with Nervecentre to deliver this programme with strong clinical leadership, transparency and collaboration at its heart.”

As part of a city-wide ambition, the trust will continue to work closely with Liverpool Women’s Hospital, Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, The Walton Centre and The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, as they progress business cases to adopt the same EPR system.

This approach supports the long-term vision for a shared EPR across Liverpool’s adult and specialist services, enabling greater integration and consistency of care.

The new system is hoped to support safety, quality and efficiency by giving clinical and operational teams better access to real-time information at the point of care.

Paul Volkaerts, chief executive of Nervecentre, said: “This partnership will bring a further 1,600 hospital beds onto the Nervecentre EPR platform, which has been designed from the ground up to support collaboration between hospitals while delivering the intuitive digital tools clinicians need on the frontline.

“We look forward to working with LUHFT to help realise their vision for more connected, digitally enabled care across the city.”

The agreement represents another milestone in Nervecentre’s continued growth across the NHS with 15 trusts now committed to its platform.

Nervecentre has established a strong presence in the Midlands, with Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation TrustUnited Lincolnshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust; and Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust selecting the firm as their preferred EPR supplier.

Other organisations in the region to have gone live with Nervecentre’s EPR include University Hospitals of Derby and Burton Foundation Trust, Chesterfield Royal Hospital Foundation Trust, Northampton General Hospital and East Sussex Healthcare.

Outside of the Midlands, Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust and York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust also selected Nervecentre as their preferred supplier.

However, York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals has delayed the go-live of the EPR system, which was originally planned to be rolled out in February 2026.

  • As the EPR Programme Director for East Sussex Healthcare, I can confirm we are actually outside the Midlands (down on the South Coast) but are honorary members of the East Midlands Acute Providers (EMAP), due mainly to my Derbyshire roots! In all seriousness, I’d like to welcome LUHFT to the fold – please do reach out if we can help with anything.

    • I apologise for my poor knowledge of the Midlands!
