Exclusive: Guy’s Cancer and Careology partner for digital platform

Guy’s Cancer and Careology have formed a five-year collaboration which aims to drive innovation in cancer care as well as improve patient experiences and outcomes at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

Careology’s technology will be available to patients at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and their families, providing access to tools via its app and online. This support can be used at home and can connect with their care teams.

For patients, it means they can access information about their treatment in one place, with capability to log symptoms and side effects and record any issues they experience along with the opportunity to manage their medications.

The technology also allows healthcare professionals to better manage treatment for people living with cancer, by providing remote insights and data – something which has never previously been available. Clinicians will have real-time visibility of the information, supporting them to provide proactive care and with better insight.

The collaboration will also focus on improving and extending tools to digitalise the cancer pathway. In turn, this will improve early visibility of issues, reduce clinical administration, deliver greater operational efficiencies and improve patient safety.

Initially, Guy’s and St Thomas’ will use the Careology platform for patients within a particular cancer specialty so they can evaluate the impact it has. The technology will also be available to the NHS nationwide and healthcare providers globally.

Dr Majid Kazmi, director of innovation for cancer and surgery, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Digital technology has the potential to help patients and carers to be better informed and supported as well as giving healthcare workers the relevant information that allows them to provide a more responsive service and frees up time to care.

“We have been impressed with the approach taken by Careology and the strides they have already made to build an innovative and accessible solution. We are excited to be working together to build the world’s leading digital cancer care platform”.

In addition, Careology’s partnership with another cancer organisation, Macmillan Cancer Support, means patients can use the app to gain access to trusted and personalised advice to understand more about their condition and treatment.

Paul Landau, founder and CEO of Careology said: “There’s a huge opportunity for digital to transform the delivery of traditional cancer care and we are incredibly excited about this collaboration as we pave the way for how digital is adopted in the sector.

“We are creating important technology that provides enhanced support the patient as well as improved clinical insight, data and operational enhancements. Our collaboration with the trust will allow us to accelerate the development and uptake of this vital new category with a world-class partner to help transform traditional cancer care through scalable technology so more people receive the best possible care.”
