Our latest Movers and Shakers roundup features key departures from NHS England and moves involving NHS Providers and Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust.

Professor Jonathan Benger is leaving his role as acting national CCIO at NHS England to become the new chief medical officer at the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE).

In an NHS England internal bulletin Dr Tim Ferris, director of transformation, said: “Jonathan has played a significant role in NHS Digital’s leadership in recent years, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, and I have appreciated his expertise and advice.”

Dr Gareth Thomas, the long-serving deputy national CCIO at NHS England is also departing to take up a new role as digital innovation director across the Greater Manchester health and care system.

The new role is a joint appointment between Health Innovation Manchester and NHS Greater Manchester Integrated Care.

Mark Cubbon, current NHS England chief delivery officer, has been appointed as chief executive at Manchester University Foundation Trust. He is due to begin leading the largest NHS provider in England in spring next year.

The managing director of Wiltshire Health and Care, Douglas Blair, has been appointed as chief executive at Gloucestershire Health and Care Foundation Trust. He will join the community and mental health trust after outgoing CEO Paul Roberts retires in March 2023.

NHS England has appointed Sarah-Jane Marsh as its new national director of urgent and emergency care and deputy chief operating officer.

Marsh will leave her role as chief executive officer at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Foundation Trust, a move announced by Steve Barclay last month at the NHS Providers conference and to NHS England staff.

Julian Hartley, current chief executive at The Leeds Hospitals NHS Trust, has been appointed as the next chief executive of NHS Providers. Hartley will take up the new role on 1 February 2023.

Chair of NHS Providers Ron Kerr said: “I am delighted that Julian is joining us to take up this very important and challenging role. NHS Providers is a successful and well-regarded membership organisation.

“I know Julian will be an excellent chief executive who will lead the next stage of our work, delivering our strategic vision and helping members – together with their system partners – to drive improvements for patients, service users and the communities they serve during what is a period of unprecedented challenge for health and care services.”

NHS Supply Chain’s commercial executive, Andy Windsor, announced his departure just days after it was revealed the procurement agency is dramatically changing its plans for its operating model.

Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust has appointed Mike Bateson, Karen Green and Robert Copley to its Council of Governors. Governors represent staff and patients and play a key role in holding the Trust Board to account.
