DrDoctor steps into mental health support with Maia acquisition
- 14 August 2024
- DrDoctor has acquired mental health platform Maia from Mindwave Ventures
- Maia, which allows users to manage appointments and access health record information, will merge with DrDoctor’s PEP
- The acquisition aims to provide ICBs with a means to join up secondary and tertiary care services
DrDoctor has made its first foray into the mental health and community support space after acquiring personal health record platform (PHP), Maia.
Maia is a patient engagement and care planning app that allows patients to view, book, amend and cancel their appointments, complete questionnaires, access their care plans, view clinical documents and access their health information.
Following its acquisition from digital health company Mindwave Ventures, Maia will be integrated into DrDoctor’s patient engagement platform (PEP), which is used across more than 70 NHS trusts and health boards in England including Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.
In a press release, DrDoctor said the acquisition would provide integrated care boards (ICBs) in England with “a single, interoperable solution which combines the best of both PHR and PEP and crosses care settings and workflow silos.”
Financial details of the acquisition were not immediately disclosed.
Tom Whicher, CEO at DrDoctor, said: “The Maia technology is a really smart addition to our platform – it means we can ensure mental health is given the same attention and focus as physical health.
“By joining up a service users’ treatment pathway with their record, service users will have the tools necessary to better manage their own health journey and gain visibility and control.”
Maia was designed as a customisable mental health and community support platform for mental health, community, acute and specialist NHS trusts. It can integrate with various electronic patient record (EPR) systems, including The Access Group’s Rio mental health EPR.
Whicher said DrDoctor’s acquisition of the Maia platform from Mindwave would allow it to “[connect] the disparate dots and siloed operational workflows across secondary and tertiary care settings”.
Mindwave has previously worked alongside Microsoft and Healthcare Communications to deliver digital care tools for patients at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.
