Our latest Movers and Shakers roundup includes a new chief executive for the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and the current NHS England chair announcing he will step down next year following discussions with Wes Streeting.

Sir Julian Hartley has been appointed as chief executive of CQC. He has been the chief executive of NHS Providers since February 2023, prior to which he was chief executive of several organisations, most recently ten years as chief executive of Leeds Teaching Hospitals.

After almost three years in the role Richard Meddings, chair of NHS England, has announced he will step down in March 2025 after discussions with Wes Streeting, health secretary.

Rima Makarem is stepping down from her role as chair of Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Integrated Care Board (ICB) in December 2024 to become chair of Somerset Foundation Trust, which she will join early next year.

Egress Group, a data partner for public sector organisations and private sector businesses, has appointed industry leader Kieran Hughes as chief executive. Hughes joined in September 2024 and will lead the integration of Egress and Stalis, a specialist provider of data services to the NHS.

Joanne Chadwick-Bell, chief executive at East Sussex Healthcare Trust, will become group chief executive at Royal Wolverhampton Trust and Walsall Healthcare Trust in January 2025.

He will step down from his current role as non-executive director at Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire ICB, which he has held since July 2022.
