Based on 3,000 responses from healthcare leaders across 14 countries, the 2024 Future Health Index explores how healthcare leaders view their organisation’s ability to deliver high-quality care. In this year’s report the focus is on gaps in staffing, insights, and sustainability. The UK report, based on responses from 200 UK leaders, compares local findings with the global average and reveals how leaders are embracing technologies despite systemic challenges.
UK staff face some of the highest levels of burnout, with leaders turning to automation to relieve the burden on staff. However, staff scepticism remains a barrier to adoption, with only around half (55%) using automation to improve appointment scheduling. Leaders see the biggest opportunity areas for automation in medication management and workflow prioritisation.
Virtual care is also viewed positively as a way to ease the workforce crisis, but leaders in the UK are not as optimistic as the global average. Only 30% say it has helped their organisations better reach underserved communities.
Leaders want to embrace data to advance patient care but are struggling with integration issues. A total of 94% of healthcare leaders experience integration challenges that prevent their organisations providing timely, high-quality care. AI use is accelerating despite widespread concerns around data bias.
This year’s Future Health Index confirms that technology has the power to transform healthcare and reveals UK leaders’ views on the key areas for investment.
