Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has announced that it will implement MEDITECH’s Expanse electronic patient record (EPR) in its 20 locations around London.
The programme, which is expected to go live in spring 2026, will integrate Moorfields’ existing ophthalmology clinical noting system, OpenEyes, with the cloud-based Expanse platform to establish one all-inclusive EPR across its network, with Expanse as the foundation.
Expanse will create one integrated EPR that delivers the same real-time access and view of patient health data at all of Moorfields’ locations, with departments such as A&E, radiology, pathology and pharmacy being fully digitised for the first time.
John Spencer, chief operating officer at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said: “I am delighted we are integrating our specialist ophthalmology system OpenEyes with MEDITECH, which has proven NHS experience.
“Our development focus is to optimise patient care and improve information for clinicians to aid their decision making.
“The EPR will support the trust’s position as a world-leading eye care, research, and educational organisation, as we edge closer to moving to our new centre for advancing eye care in Camden.”
In addition to providing a more complete view of each patient’s health journey, the solution is expected to boost organisational efficiency by streamlining processes and connecting staff through one shared system, including administrators, nurses, pharmacy, imaging, inpatient and A&E.
Charlotte Scott, executive general manager at MEDITECH UK and Ireland, said: “We are proud to expand our London footprint, as another world-renowned healthcare organisation chooses Expanse as its go-forward platform.
“This collaboration exemplifies the power and flexibility of Expanse to meet the unique needs of a wide variety of healthcare organisations worldwide.
“As a global leader in ophthalmology, Moorfields Eye Hospital is making a real impact in healthcare. We are honoured to partner with them on this transformative programme.”
The web-based Expanse EPR offers mobile and app-based workflows, real-time updates, access to historical patient data, analytics and reporting tools and a patient engagement portal, among other features.
Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust went live with Expanse in August 2024 as part of the trust’s five-year Digital Future’s Strategy.
NHS Norfolk and Waveney Acute Hospital Collaborative also signed a deal in July 2024 with MEDITECH worth £88 million for an EPR system.
The collaborative is made up of three NHS trusts: Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust; James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust; and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn NHS Foundation Trust.
Meditech was selected as the supplier in August 2023 and the EPR is planned to go live in 2026.
