Liva Healthcare has acquired UK-based Discover Momenta for an undisclosed amount, as part of its growth strategy plans.

Liva, provider of app-based lifestyle coaching to support people to manage their weight and lifestyle-related health conditions, already works with the NHS. The recent acquisition will significantly expand the company’s reach within the UK and complement its existing portfolio, with both companies providing evidence-based health programmes.

Discover Momenta provides and licenses digital, virtual and in-person healthy lifestyle programmes to NHS organisations, local authorities and other third parties across the UK. It directly supports referrals from more than 2,500 GP practices working across 450 PCNs.

Shahram Sharif, chief executive of Liva Healthcare, said: “Today’s news marks a step-change in Liva’s ambitions, as we embark on a revamped strategic growth plan to help more people prevent, manage and reverse their chronic conditions.

“Momenta is a highly regarded supplier of evidence-based healthy lifestyle programmes, and this acquisition cements Liva’s position as one of the largest providers of such services to the NHS in England.”

The acquisition includes subsidiary Momenta Newcastle.

In addition, Liva has secured funding from both new and existing investors to enable the acquisition and further drive its growth. Fundraising was led by IBL Group, a new investor, through its portfolio company Nupo. Existing investors MIG, Santos, Maj Invest and other private investors also participated.

Harry MacMillan, chief executive of Momenta, is to join the leadership team of Liva Healthcare.

“Our combined track records in programme and platform development and digital, virtual and in-person delivery are highly complementary.

“Liva’s digital platform will enable many more people across the UK and beyond to benefit from Momenta’s expert-developed chronic disease management programmes. This scalability is essential to stem the rising tide of chronic conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease in a meaningful and cost-effective way,” MacMillan said.

In August 2023, Liva was one of four digital programmes recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence as an effective and cost-efficient way to manage complex obesity cases.

In November 2024 it formed a partnership with Boots Online Doctor, offering a  coaching app for its patients to support their weight loss goals – including for those who are using GLP-1 weight loss drugs like Mounjaro and Wegovy.
