Wales publishes QoF scores

Wales has become the last of the four UK countries to publish Quality and Outcomes Framework results for its practices.

The figures show that the 502 practices in Wales achieved an average of 949 points out of a possible total of 1050.

The total was the lowest of the four countries in the UK but Welsh practices also had the highest disease prevalence rates.

Dr Brian Gibbons, Welsh health minister and a former GP, said Welsh practices had exceeded expectations and that the information gathered as part of the QoF work would help to provide better and more appropriate treatment to patients in future.

He added: “Such detailed monitoring of chronic conditions gives us the most accurate picture yet of areas where people are most at risk which will certainly help in preventing ill-health.”

The figures show that practices earned more than 90 per cent of the points available in six of the ten diseases covered in the clinical domain including management of patients with coronary heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. Practices earned between 80 and 90 per cent of the points available in the other disease areas covering mental health, epilepsy, chronic obstrsuctive pulmonary disease and cancer.

In the organisational domain practices did best on practice management, earning 93 per cent of the points available, and least well on records management where Welsh practices earned 84 per cent of the points available.

The indicators and achievement levels in the QoF are currently being reviewed.
