Dublin’s St James’s links speech and radiology

Ireland’s largest hospital, St James’s Hospital in Dublin, is using Nuance Communication’s PowerScribe dictaphone system to automate the creation of patient radiology reports using speech recognition.
The Nuance system has been integrated with St James’s Cerner-supplied RadNet radiology system.
In its first week of use, Nuance say PowerScribe has enabled the radiology department of the hospital to eliminate 100% of the backlog of patient reports, and to begin benefiting from the power of speech recognition within the department.

PowerScribe unifies the radiology information system (RIS), picture archiving and communications system (PACS) and electronic ordering processes, and includes advanced features that further reduce the time needed to complete a patient report.
These include pre-defined templates, a single log-on for PowerScribe and RIS/PACS systems, electronic sign-offs and data integration with electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
Kit Butterworth, senior client executive at Cerner, said: “The seamless integration of the PowerScribe system with the Cerner Millennium RadNet radiology solution has significantly enhanced the workflow of the 15 clinicians in the radiology department who use the system on a daily basis.”
A Nuance spokesperson told E-Health Europe healthcare professionals across Europe rely on dictaphone transcription processing and speech-recognition to improve the accuracy of patient reports and reduce report turn-around times.
