PRIMIS+ moves to NHS Information Centre

  • 2 December 2008

Responsibility for the data quality organisation PRIMIS+ is to move from NHS Connecting for Health to the NHS Information Centre from the beginning of next year.

PRIMIS+ has a four year contract with CfH to provide data quality and information management training and support to NHS staff, but the contract will be transferred to the Information Centre on 1 January. It expires on 1 November next year.

The NHS IC said service users and staff employed by Nottingham University, where PRIMIS+ is based, would be unaffected by the transfer and that the transition had already begun.

The NHS IC also said it is to the lead on the procurement of a future data quality support service for the NHS.

Medical director Dr Mark Davies will become senior responsible owner for PRIMIS+ from 1 January. He said: “I look forward to working closely with service users in the future to ensure the service continues to benefit NHS front line staff in using healthcare information to best support their work.

“In particular, we are keen to communicate updates on the progress made during the procurement process and will investigate further ways in which service users and stakeholders can be involved.”

The NHS IC said the transfer of the PRIMIS+ contract would ensure greater integration with the NHS informatics agenda and support recommendations from the Health Informatics Review, which highlighted the need for high quality patient information.

Tim Straughan, chief executive of the NHS IC, said: “PRIMIS+ is an invaluable service and I am delighted the NHS IC is taking over responsibility for the contract.

"The service has a pivotal role in helping NHS staff understand and best use information towards providing high quality patient care, which is a key aim of The NHS IC.”

The PRIMIS+ service has provided data quality support for CfH’s GP2GP record transfer project and the Summary Care Record early adopters as well as implementation of the directed enhanced service for IM&T.
