    The Digital Health Leadership Summit is an exclusive two-day event focusing on driving digital transformation across health and social care. Key themes for this year include learning from other sectors that have achieved digitally-led services and engaging board-level executives.

    Lee Bond, Finance Director, Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust

    Lee Bond Lee was appointed in March 2013.

    Prior to this, he was a Director of Business Delivery within Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust and before that, Director of Finance at Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

    His previous financial posts include Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.

    James Freed, Chief Information Officer, Health Education England

    James Freed James trained as a molecular biologist for several years before making the move to process redesign and IT. He worked in hospitals in South West London for the Cancer Services Collaborative, an organisation funded by the NHS Modernisation Agency. He cut his teeth on national IT implementation following a move to NHS Connecting for Health where he worked as Best Practice Lead for pathology, order communications, and prevention, screening and surveillance before taking up the role of National Lead for Screening in Leeds.

    James then moved to the Health Protection Agency where his chief role was managing an operational Information Management department and contributing to strategic decision-making supporting infectious disease surveillance and control. He managed the Infections Specialist Library, which subsequently migrated to NICE as part of NHS Evidence.

    James then became Head of Information Strategy at Public Health England and authored the PHE Knowledge Strategy which provides a vision for knowledge and information for the whole public health system. He also contributed to the National Information Board framework Personalised Health and Care 2020 and has been involved in implementing its vision.

    James now works as Chief Information Officer for Health Education England where he is responsible for describing and implementing the strategic direction for information and technology for the organisation. He is passionate about digital literacy and the professionalism of Health Informaticians across the health and care system. In this capacity he is programme director for the Building a Digital Ready Workforce programme as part of the NIB Paperless 2020 programme.

    In 2017 James was voted by peers as one of the top 100 influencers globally in Health IT as part of the #HIT100 twitter campaign. He is a Fellow of the British Computer Society and a Governor for his daughter’s Primary School.

    Sally Bryant and Paige Thompson, Digital Improvement Lead Midwives, Somerset Early Adopter Digital Team

    Sally Bryant and Paige Thompson Paige and Sally have been working together since August 2017 following a successful joint bid between Musgrove Park and Yeovil District Hospital to become an Early Adopter site to take forward the vision as set out in Better Births; The report of the National Maternity Review, supported by the Maternity Transformation Programme.

    Through innovative use of technology, their role is to help develop an enhanced digital infrastructure for maternity services and to cultivate a paper light system to provide seamless care for families throughout Somerset.

    Barbara Smith, IT Business System Manager, Bolton CCG

    Barbara Smith Barbara has many years of experience working for the NHS as a Nurse and Manager. In that time she has been instrumental in the planning and implementation of IT systems across various areas of the organisation, including General Practice, the Strategic Health Authority and now Bolton CCG.

    Barbara has overseen the development of innovative new technologies to improve care services, from electronic patient records to the introduction of mobile and interactive technology.

    She is also a Registered Mentor and Coach with the North West Leadership Academy Mentoring Scheme.

    Su Long, Chief Officer, Bolton CCG

    Su Long Su’s first role in the NHS was as an information analyst. She joined the NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme in 1998, and has since undertaken varied management roles in her career that have influenced her approach to commissioning. These include Regional Manager of the Cancer Services Collaborative, performance improvement at a Strategic Health Authority and a senior operational role at a Foundation Trust.

    Under her leadership, Bolton CCG won “Best new organisation” at the HFMA Awards and, in 2015, commenced the innovative ‘Bolton Quality Contract’, setting 19 standards for all General Practices in Bolton. Su chairs the Bolton Care Record Programme Board as part of her leadership role in transformation of health and care services in Bolton. She has a keen interest in population health and is determined to work closely with Practices, partner organisations and the public to deliver improvement.

    Robert Woolley, Chief Executive, University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust

    Robert Woolley Robert has been Chief Executive of University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust since 2010, having served on the Trust Board since 2002. In his time as Chief Executive, the Trust has been rated outstanding by the CQC, completed a major redevelopment programme, achieved Biomedical Research Centre status and been named a Global Digital Exemplar, while maintaining a positive financial position throughout. Before moving to Bristol, he spent nine years at Barts and the London in a range of senior planning and operational roles.

    Robert is STP lead for Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, as well as a director of the West of England AHSN and member of the HEE South of England Education and Training Board.

    He has an English degree from Oxford University and an MBA with distinction from the University of Bath.

    Cait O’Riordan, Chief Product and Information Officer, Financial Times

    Cait O'Riordan

    Cait O’Riordan is the FT’s Chief Product and Information Officer (CPIO). She is responsible for platform and product strategy, development and operations across the FT Group, working in close partnership with editorial and commercial teams. She is on the FT executive board, which is responsible for the company’s global strategy and performance. Before joining the FT in February 2016 Cait led the BBC’s digital product development for the London 2012 Olympics and played a central role in the user and revenue growth of music app company Shazam. A long time ago she was a journalist and her favourite possession is her VW campervan.

    Andy Kinnear, Programme Director, Connecting Care, the Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire interoperability programme

    Andy Kinnear is an experienced Chief Information Officer (CIO) in his 26th year with the NHS. He has a successful track record of delivering information & technology strategy and solutions and a wholehearted commitment to improving the health and care system.

    Andy has 4 roles. Substantively he is the Director of Digital Transformation for South, Central and West CSU looking after the delivery of 200+ digital projects to NHS organisations across the South of England, He is also the Programme Director for Connecting Care, the Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire interoperability programme. Connecting Care is a partnership of 17 organisations in the West Country and has successfully created a single shared record combining data from GP Practices, Community Services, Local Authorities, Acute Hospitals and Out-of-Hours services. Connecting Care is recognised as one of the leading integrated digital care record (IDCR) programmes in the country.

    In his 3rd role, Andy is also currently seconded 2 days per week as Local Delivery Advisor for NHS Digital advising them on Health and Social Care Integration and is working closely with national Health and Care agencies on the development of the integration strategy. This roadmap will seek to outline the stages to deliver fully integrated care records, an ambition laid out in the Five Year Forward View and Personalised Health and Care 2020.

    Finally, in April 2016 Andy took on the role of Chair of the BCS Health & Care Executive hoping to help develop the professionalization agenda for CIO and CCIO colleagues. Andy is also a member of the national CIO network and was elected to the CIO Advisory Panel in June 2016. He works closely with colleagues on the development of the informatics profession within health and social care. He is an experienced public speaker and routinely presents at national conferences on health and care information topics.

    Julia Clarke, CEO, Bristol Community Health

    Julia Clarke

    Julia Clarke has been Chief Executive at Bristol Community Health since its launch as a Social Enterprise out of the NHS in October 2011. Under Julia’s leadership the organisation has established itself as a key provider and partner in the health system locally achieving three extensions to the original contract term which now runs through to October 2019.

    Over the past five years Julia has led a major change programme including service developments, quality enhancements, improvements to operational and back office processes and significant cultural change based on employee ownership and a new expression of shared values.

    Before joining Bristol Community Health Julia worked with the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust as a Management Consultant, undertaking a wide ranging, strategic review and other projects. She was Chair of the Oxfordshire Learning Disability NHS Trust from 2007 to 2011. Julia is an accredited executive coach and has delivered leadership and strategy development for a number of organisations within the Health Sector.

    Shane Tickell, CEO, IMS MAXIMS

    Shane Tickell

    Shane is a well-known and respected figure in the health and e-health sectors, with more than two decades of experience in senior roles with most of the major players in the clinical software sector.

    He provides the strategic leadership and vision for IMS MAXIMS, using his expertise to further build and strengthen its position as an industry leader. Shane’s key priorities are to ensure that IMS MAXIMS provides the best clinical IT solutions and the highest standards of service today, while at the same time developing new generations of software that will enable better patient care and promote greater organisational efficiency in the short and long term future. To help achieve these goals, Shane maintains an active, hands-on approach to the company’s operations, regularly visiting customers and contributing to discussions about the future development of IMS MAXIMS solutions. In addition he offers thought leadership on current trends and themes and is a regular contributor to several publications.

    Adrian Byrne, CIO at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHSFT)

    15 years or so pursuing a strategy for electronic patient records through integration and evolution. The aim is a seamless user experience with full decision support and data sharing. This is a challenge for integration.

    Very interested in direct patient to secondary care interaction via secure web and messaging, and developed a platform at UHS called My Medical Record that is used by a number of NHS organizations. Patients are now benefiting from reduction in unnecessary appointments, and can communicate directly with clinicians. Surely a federated identity for a patient is the future, as opposed to the many individual web sites that are springing up?

    Believer in open platforms, vendor neutral data, and that FHIR is the way forward for clinical applications.

    Justin WhatlingVice President, Population Health Global

    Justin Whatling Dr Justin Whatling leads Population Health management for Cerner outside of the USA. Doctor by background, Justin has more than 20 years of experience in healthcare focused on using technology and informatics to transform outcomes for patients. He recently sat on the National Information Board for the NHS, was the immediate past Chair of BCS Health, and is a Visiting Professor at UCL.

     

    Paul Charnley, Director of IT and Information, Wirral University Teaching Hospital

    Paul moved to Wirral University Teaching Hospital from his role as Managing Director of a health informatics consultancy in December 2016. He has more than 35 years’ experience in health care informatics having worked in top roles at the National Programme for IT and Cheshire and Merseyside Strategic Health Authority. He also worked for 5 years for Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar leading their strategic Informatics programme. He has been at Wirral before, as he was formerly Director of Health Care Informatics and Wirral Health Informatics Service in the 1990’s and 2000’s.

    John Lawlor, Chief Executive, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust

    John joined Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust  in June 2014, having worked as an Area Director in NHS England from March 2014, responsible for the Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear part of the north of England.

    His previous role was Chief Executive of Leeds Primary Care Trust (PCT) and then of the Airedale, Bradford and Leeds PCT between January 2010 and March 2013.

    His earlier career in the NHS was as both as a Chief Executive and a Deputy Chief Executive/Director of two NHS providers across Yorkshire.  He was Chief Executive of Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust between 2006 and 2009 and, prior to that, was Executive Director/Deputy Chief Executive of Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust between 1999 and 2005.

    John is married and he has two grown up children.

    Rob Shaw, Deputy Chief Executive, NHS Digital

    Rob Shaw was appointed Deputy Chief Executive of NHS Digital in August 2017. Rob previously held the role of Interim Chief Executive Officer from February 2017.

    Appointed as Chief Operating Officer in April 2016, Rob was also the Senior Responsible Officer for the Cyber Security Programme acting as a gross-government cyber security advocate. Rob led and championed the creation of CareCert, a new national service that provides real-time intelligence, expert guidance and advice on cyber security threats to health and care organisations across England. He is well respected as a system leader in this space, in both public and private sector and is accredited as a SIRO by National Cyber Security Centre’s approved training provider.

    Giles York, Chief Constable, Sussex Police

    Giles York

    As Chief Constable of Sussex Police, Giles York works closely with the Police and Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne and leads the Chief Officer team for Sussex Police. Giles started his service in Maidstone with Kent Police in 1990, spending many years policing the Medway Towns, progressing from Inspector through to Superintendent as the Divisional Commander. He developed a credible portfolio as an operational commander for firearms, public order, football and Channel Tunnel critical response amongst, other areas of operational command. He finished his service with Kent in 2004 as Head of Special Branch with responsibility for the Channel Tunnel and Dover ports as well as national contribution to Special Branch. Before moving upward through the ranks as Assistant Chief Constable and Deputy Chief Constable in South Wales Police and Sussex Police respectively.

    Giles is the force lead for Diversity and in this role he has established a network of force champions which has led to Sussex Police regularly being in the Stonewall top 100 employers.  In 2014 he was promoted to Chief Constable for Sussex Police. He faces the challenge of finding about a further £55m over the coming years and is developing a plan that will exploit collaborative opportunities, predominantly with Surrey Police, combined with determined plans to reduce demand on policing in Sussex.

    Giles was awarded the Queen’s Policing Medal in the 2015 New Year’s Honours.

    Eve Roodhouse, Interim Director for Implementation and the Digital Environment, NHS Digital

    Eve is passionate about supporting the NHS and Local Authorities to make the most of our digital products and services and working with colleagues across the organisation to ensure we become more responsive to our customers. She established the new Implementation and Business Change function in April 2017 which remains part of her portfolio and takes the lead on Digital Skills.

    Eve has more than 17 years of experience working in complex delivery environments (14 being in NHS informatics), with a breadth of experience that takes in all aspects of the programme management lifecycle from stakeholder engagement, business case development, procurement and supplier management, to software development, change management and managed closure. She graduated from the Major Project Leadership Academy in February 2016.

     

    Joanna Smith, Chief Information Officer, Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust

    Joanna started her career in the global pharmaceutical industry with international roles at Roche and Takeda.

    In her current role as CIO for the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust, she is leading the organisation through a major transformation programme with significant investment in new systems and technologies. Comprising a complete overhaul of the IT and telecoms infrastructure, VOIP and migration to the Cloud.

    Leading in the introduction of major new clinical solutions she is helping to digitise patient case notes, replacement current patient administration system and working on a new electronic prescribing and medicines administration solution.

    Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust is the UK’s largest specialist heart and lung centre, is based in Chelsea, West London and Harefield, Middlesex.  It is Europe’s top-ranked respiratory research centre and the cardiac, cardiovascular and critical care teams are rated in the top three most highly-cited health research teams in Europe.  The hospital is Europe’s largest unit for the treatment of cystic fibrosis, dealing with over 650 adults and 300 children with this condition. The Trust is also the country’s largest centre for the treatment of adult congenital heart disease.

    Matthew Swindells, National Director: Operations and Information, NHS England

    Matthew Swindells

    Matthew joined NHS England in May 2016 from the Cerner Group, where he was Senior Vice President for Population Health and Global Strategy. He is responsible for national performance of the NHS against the NHS Constitution Standards, assurance of Clinical Commissioning Groups, achieving digital transformation, and information and technology programmes.

    He has over 25 years’ experience in health care services, and has worked in the Department of Health and the Prime Minister’s Office of Public Service Reform.

    Matthew began his career at Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital in the early 1990s, and went on to become Director of Clinical Services of Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospital and later Chief Executive of the Royal Surrey County Hospital.

    He is visiting professor and chair of the advisory committee in the School of Health Management at the University of Surrey and Member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Population Health Management.

    Jason Broch, GP, Oakwood Lane Medical Practice

    Jason Broch

    Jason is a GP at Oakwood Lane Medical Practice and has been Chair of NHS Leeds North CCG since 2013. As clinical lead, he also Chairs not only the Board, but also the Council of Members. As part of work on behalf of the whole Leeds Health & Social care economy, Jason leads the Leeds Informatics Board, which has created successful projects such as the integrated Leeds Care Record and award winning integrated business analytics. Jason also Co-Chairs the Integrated Commissioning Executive with the Director of Adult Social Care, to enable joined up working between the NHS and Local Authority in Leeds.

    Jason has lived in the Leeds North area for all of his life, except for receiving his medical training at the University of Manchester. He spends some of his spare time in leadership positions in local third sector organisations and schools.

    Lisa Emery, Chief Information Officer, West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust

    Prior to this role, Lisa worked in the NHS for 12 years as a biomedical scientist, starting her career at Watford General in 1989 before moving to University College Hospital London. Outside of the NHS she has many years’ experience as a programme manager and director working on large healthcare programmes, including a spell in the Middle East, and several years working with BT/Perot on the National Programme for IT in London, predominantly leading first of type deployments.

    Lisa returned to West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust in 2012 initially to lead on the delivery of the Trust’s IM&T Strategy, and was subsequently appointed to the Board-level role of CIO.

    Her role now also includes responsibility for creating and leading the Trust’s Strategy Delivery Office, with responsibility for delivery of the organisation’s transformation and efficiency projects. This has included the establishment of a Trust-wide programme management office.

    Beverley Bryant, COO, System C & Graphnet Care Alliance

    Beverley is chief operating officer of the System C & Graphnet Care Alliance. She works across the Care Alliance, with specific responsibility for strategy, delivery and business development.  Beverley’s focus is on delivering innovative health technology that improves patient outcomes, drives service efficiency and integrates health and social care services around the needs of the individual.

    Prior to joining the Care Alliance, Beverley was Director of Digital Transformation at NHS Digital and Director of Digital Technology for NHS England.

    Beverley is a graduate of Sheffield University with a first class degree in Japanese. She worked as a translator before moving into programming and becoming fascinated by technology’s potential to enable business process transformation.

    Natalie Chishick, Vice President, techUK

    Natalie Chishick

    Natalie has a decade of experience working in healthcare,helping organisations build and manage their corporate reputations, providing expert stakeholder engagement and customer relations, and shaping international and national policy through public affairs activity. She specialises in integrated strategic communication and marketing campaigns, and before joining IMS MAXIMS as Policy & Communications Director in 2016, spearheaded techUK’s Health and Social Care programme, effectively positioning the organisation as a critical friend to government and providing regular commentary on the Paperless2020 agenda. One of her biggest achievements at techUK was launching the Interoperability Charter, and having recently returned to techUK as Vice Chair of the Health and Social Care Council (representing IMS MAXIMS), she will continue to champion the interests of suppliers and ensure progress is made in driving forward the interoperability agenda.

    At IMS MAXIMS, Natalie is responsible for all policy,communications and marketing; leading on the development and management of the company’s profile and reputation amongst its key audiences including clients,customers, partners and the wider health and care community. She also works closely with decision and policy makers in Westminster, Whitehall and the devolved administrations to foster an environment that ensures the benefits of the digital health agenda and use of EPR software is maximised for healthcare providers in the public and private markets.

    Jane Berezynskyj, Regional Head of Implementation & Business Change – Midlands & East, NHS Digital

    Before joining the NHS in 2009, Jane worked extensively in financial services, both in-house IT functions and as part of service organisations. Her roles in the private sector consisted of digitally enabling those businesses to achieve transformation: working on e-commerce delivery channels when they were still in their infancy and on large scale mergers and acquisitions which needed digital enablement to enable the transition and subsequent transformation into one business.

    Jane has worked as a Programme Director in a mental health / community care provider organisation and was most recently a CIO in a tertiary care provider.  This gives Jane first-hand knowledge and understanding of the digital challenges and opportunities faced in provider organisations , as well as her experiences of implementing three different EPRs.

    Nigel Foster, Director of Finance and IM&T, Frimley Health

    Nigel joined Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust as their Director of Finance and IM&T in August 2017.  Prior to this he was Director of Finance for the three CCGs in East Berkshire, and he continues to have strategic oversight of the CCGs’ finances in his new role. He has been working in the NHS since 2002, originally with Wokingham PCT and then NHS Berkshire West where he held a variety of senior finance roles. From March 2012 he led the formation of Central Southern Commissioning Support Unit (CSCSU) and became their Chief Finance Officer. He joined the CCGs in East Berkshire in November 2013.

    Nigel is a CIPFA qualified accountant who started his career with Oxfordshire County Council before a spell in the private sector working for the business process outsourcing firm Liberata, where amongst other things he managed a pan-European shared service centre for a subsidiary of ICI. He is now heavily involved in working with colleagues across the Frimley Health Integrated Care System, and also leads the ‘Connected Care’ IT interoperability project in East Berkshire which is enabling the sharing of patient records between primary, secondary and social care.

    Andrew Forrest, CIO, Taunton & Somerset NHS Trust

    Andrew is the Chief Information Officer for Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, one of the national Global Digital Exemplar sites.  He has over 20 years’ experience in Health Informatics and was part of the national electronic record development project and telehealth research programme.

    He believes in working closely with the clinicians and suppliers to make high quality information available where it is needed to support patient care and to make the applications intuitive, safe and easy to use. The Trust has a unique and exciting opportunity with the funding and the status that comes with being a Global Digital Exemplar site to work closely with clinicians, local people and organisations to create a digital hospital and care community over the next few years.

    Always interested by new digital technologies, for the last 20 years Helen has been working in the world of mobile communications, Orange, O2, Telefonica & EE, on the quest for delivering the wire free future.

    The last 12 years focused on the public sector, specialising in healthcare and the NHS, predominately around understanding how mobile technology can transform clinical working and enable better outcomes for citizens and patients. This included consultancy work mapping clinicians out in the field and working collaboratively with both the NHS centrally and regionally to deliver solutions that really add value.

    To continue the journey Helen moved to Samsung in August 2017 to head the healthcare business in the UK and supported initiatives such as Digital Health Intelligence, CIO/CCIO leader’s networks and One Health Tech.

    Sam Barclay, CCIO, Whittington Health NHS Trust

    Sam was appointed as CCIO at Whittington Health NHS Trust in 2016. After authoring their digital strategy he led the Trust’s successful bid to be the Fast Follower to UH Bristol GDE. He works as a SpR in geriatrics in the Trust. He enjoys all things rugby especially his beloved Wasps team.
